SANTA ROSA (KRON) -- A barking dog that alerted its owner that his home was on fire has died after apparently running back into the burning building.
24-year old Justin Kedton says he was sleeping early Monday morning when his dog started barking. Kedton woke up to find the house on fire. He says he and the dog escaped. Kedton says as he grabbed a garden hose to try to extinguish the blaze that the dog ran back into the home and was overcome by fire in the back room.
The fire spread to the attic and roof before firefighters were able to bring it under control. It appears discarded smoking materials on the back porch caused the fire which produced about $100,000 in damages.
At about the same time firefighters also reported to another nearby home fire that apparently started because of a vehicle fire.
