SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Members of the current class of recruits at the San Francisco Police Academy will be doing their training in the Bay View district, just one of the responses to an increase in shootings in the area in recent weeks.

Chief Greg Suhr says he will move the current academy class for the next fourteen weeks into the parts of the Bayview where the most violence has happened.

"We're going to get more people, more foot patrols, out there walking the beat, walking the merchant corridors, walking Third Street, walking San Bruno Avenue, walking Leland where a lot of our crime is happening particularly in the hours between seven and ten p.m," Supervisor Malia Cohen tells KRON 4's Dan Kerman  "That's when people are getting off of work, kids are getting out of school, particularly their summer programs to create a greater sense of security, another set of eyes and ears, to work with the merchants and the policing strategies we already have in place."

Authorities say these academy recruits are not rookies because off of them have worked for other police departments in the past.

The chief is also deploying some members of the department's SWAT team to the Bayview to address the rising problems of violent crime there.
