In Walnut Creek, mourners gathered to remember the life of 22-year-old Anthony Banta Junior.
Banta was shot and killed after officers responded to a 9-1-1 call in which someone was screaming in the background.
Banta's grandfather, Marvin, drove in from up North to memorialize his grandson, while at the same time wondering how this could have happened.
He says Banta was not a violent person.
Banta was a stylist at the hair salon where the vigil was held and the owners say they've shed a lot of tears since the shooting.
Early Thursday morning, police responded to a 9-11 call at the diablo pointe apartments in Walnut Creek.
When they arrived, police say they were forced to fire at Banta, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
They have not released any other details about the confrontation.
There were no other injuries and authorities are not looking for other suspects.
In a written statement, the Banta family says
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the peace officers who pulled their triggers and their families. may they find peace and God bless."
