SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Caltrans crews will start working on an alignment change on the eastbound side of the Bay Bridge during Memorial Day weekend. However, to keep traffic delays at a minimum, they will work late at night.
Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney says the work has to be done in order to build the eastbound section of the new bridge.
“We have to move traffic down to the southern part touchdown in Oakland. We can’t build the eastbound because of the existing bridge to the south.”
Drivers traveling to Oakland from San Francisco at night should expect delays because the construction will affect five eastbound lanes but there will no bridge closure. Westbound lanes won’t be impacted at all.
“If you just expect a small delay you should be fine, if you want to be sure to stay out of it, go ahead and take the golden gate bridge,” Ney told KRON’s Reggie Kumar.
The project starts Saturday May 28 and continues Sunday night. Ney says they hope to finish by Monday night.
