Parks All Around Bay Area Could Close After Labor Day Because of State Budget Woes Created by Brian Shields on 5/28/2009 10:54:00 AM
BAY AREA (KRON) -- 25 Bay Area state parks will remain open through Labor Day under a plan to close hundreds of parks to help deal with California's budget crisis.
Angel Island, Mt. Tamalpais, several beaches along the San Mateo County coastline, and many other facilities would be shut down under the proposal now under consideration.
"We have about 25% less revenue than we thought we were going to have," Aaron McClear, the press secretary for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger told Mark Danon and Darya Folsom on the KRON 4 Morning News. "There's no more state resources going to parks. There may be other resources parks can tap into. We simply can't afford a lot of what we've become accustomed to. The Governor's not going to promise anything he can't deliver on."
McClear says California lawmakers will have to find about $20 billion in cuts when the new budget takes effect at the end of July.
"I don't think we should consider this a threat at all," State Parks Deputy Director Roy Stearns told Mark and Darya. "This is a real possibility. The state has a dire fiscal problem. We have an economy that's bottomed out. This is not a threat. This is facts laying on the table."
Stearns says there will be costs associated with closing and maintaining parks.
"There will be an expense to re-opening and rehiring people," he added. "If you close a park, there's maintenance attached to putting it in caretaker status, to keep it in good shape until we can re-open. There's a cost to that."
If you've already made plans for the summer, officials say there's no need to worry.
"The summer will remain intact for our visitors and vacationers," Stearns said. "It's also going to remain intact for all those business that surround our parks that depend on summer revenue. We hope to keep it in place through Labor Day.
