Judge Convicts Guerneville Man of Bow-and-Arrow Assault

SANTA ROSA (BCN) -- A Guerneville man was convicted in Sonoma County Superior Court Monday morning of assault with a deadly weapon for shooting an arrow that injured a Monte Rio resident in January.

Judge Gary Medvigy found Shaun Gallon, 30, guilty after a two-day, non-jury trial. Gallon faces a maximum four-year prison term when he is sentenced July 21, Deputy District Attorney Rosanne Darling said.

Gallon fired the arrow from the third-floor balcony of a home on Mill Street on Jan 27. The arrow pierced the top a convertible that was parked 60-100 feet across the street and struck James McNeil of Monte Rio in the skull. He suffered a nearly inch-long cut.

After reviewing photos taken at the scene and of the arrow itself, Medvigy ruled that the bow and arrow, while works of art, constituted a substantial weapon.

"Fortunately the arrow did not go into the neck or another soft area. Luckily it hit the skull," he said.

The Sonoma County Sheriff's SWAT unit responded to the shooting and staked out the area for more than 24 hours before searching the home where the shooter was believed to be hiding.

Gallon was not inside the home but surrendered to the sheriff’s department on March 4.

The sheriff's department at the time said Gallon was a self-taught survivalist and should be considered armed and dangerous.
