Redwood City Officials Use July 4th to Remind Residents Not to Set Off Fireworks, Fire Guns

REDWOOD CITY (BCN) – Setting off fireworks and firing a gun into the air are illegal in Redwood City and residents are being asked to remember those laws on the Fourth of July.

Redwood City spokesman Malcolm Smith says the city has adopted the International Fire Code, which prohibits any type of fireworks, including the "safe and sane" variety.

Thousands of people are injured and many fires are caused throughout the country each year on the Fourth of July due to fireworks and guns, according to Smith.

Smith says fireworks are only permitted in professional fireworks shows, such as the show at the Port of Redwood City.

In addition to monitoring the use of illegal fireworks, the Redwood City Police Department will use a "Shot Spotter" gun locator system that detects the location of any firearm discharged in the city, according to Smith.

The reckless discharge of a firearm is punishable by up to three years in state prison.

Setting off fireworks is illegal in most parts of San Mateo County.
