SANTA ROSA (BCN) – Officials say a 15-year-old girl who was struck by a car while crossing a busy Sebastopol street Friday remains in critical condition at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
According to Sebastopol police Officer Greg DeVore, the girl suffered a major head injury when she was hit by a westbound Toyota Corolla as she crossed Healdsburg Avenue near Florence Avenue, close to downtown Sebastopol, around 6:10 p.m. Friday.
The 65-year-old woman driving the car veered to the left to try to avoid hitting the girl, clipped another vehicle and crashed into the Thai Issan restaurant on the south side of Healdsburg Avenue.
No one in the restaurant was injured; the business remains closed and boarded up.
Witnesses said the girl was in a crosswalk but the accident remains under investigation.
DeVore says the driver was not cited.
Police are looking into the possibility that the sun blinded the woman while she was driving.
DeVore says the girl was in Sebastopol for the annual Fourth of July holiday fireworks show at Analy High School.
