FAIRFIELD (KRON) -- A Samoan church in Fairfield is coordinating part of the relief effort to help the victims of as many as four tsunamis which hit the islands of American and Western Samoa.
Members of the Samoan Christian Fellowship say they're in touch by phone with other churches and family members in the area devastated when the giant waves washed ashore Tuesday.
"Our church facility is open for the community to bring in anything that will help us accomplish our mission which is to help out with the tsunami relief in the Samoan Islands," church relief organizer Ben Afisivalu told the KRON 4 Morning News. "You can donate any food or clothes. We're working with the local churches in American Samoa. Their request is that they need food and clothing. A lot of people want to help out."
Church members hope to ship two or three containers. They're also raising money to get the supplies to where they need to go.
"It's going to cost us at least $20,000 for the freight. That's going to be one of the most expensive things. I know there are going to be a lot of people donating food and clothes but we're also opening our website where you can make monetary donations."
Afisivalu says he's talked with friends in the impacted area and learned that his teacher is among those confirmed dead. The Fairfield church worker adds he's still awaiting word from his siblings who still live on the island.
