SAUSALITO (BCN) -- Police in Sausalito are advising residents to be vigilant and  secure all windows and doors after a prowler allegedly broke into a home  through an unlocked deck door early Thursday morning.

Units responded to a report of a prowler in a home in the 300  block of Third Street at around 1:35 a.m., according to the Sausalito Police  Department. The intruder had apparently entered through an elevated deck door  that was left unlocked.

The suspect, described as a man around 6 feet tall with dark  slicked-back hair, was confronted by a houseguest and fled, according to  police. No one was injured, and there was no known loss of property from the  home.

Responding officers reportedly made a thorough search of the area  but did not locate the suspect. Police plan to canvass the area in search of  possible witnesses.

Anyone noticing suspicious activity in the neighborhood or who  might have information regarding the break-in is asked to contact Sausalito  police at (415) 289-4170.

Officials are reminding residents to be certain all windows and  doors are securely shut at night and when away. Police said burglars often  are able to enter homes through unlocked deck doors and elevated windows.

The Sausalito Police Department has offered to conduct a security  assessment of homes and neighborhoods. Inquiries can be made by calling the  department at (415) 289-4118.
