Oakland Steps Up Sideshow Enforcement After Last Week's Deaths
Created by Brian Shields on 10/24/2009 10:38:00 PM

OAKLAND (KRON) -- Oakland police say they're stepping up efforts to prevent potentially deadly sideshows where drivers perform dangerous manouvers for large crowds.

This weekend's crackdown follows the deaths of three people in a sideshow last weekend.

KRON 4's Da Lin says Friday night authorities arrested 19 people, towed 30 vehicles, seized two handguns, handed out 95 tickets, and took part in three pursuits.

"If people are going to come out here and drive in a reckless manner, we're going to enforce that," Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said.  "I've worked sideshows for the last ten years and a majority of them are not from Oakland."

Investigators say the victims in the last weeks fatalities were from Hayward and San Lorenzo.  Those people died when their car flipped after hitting a parked car.

seriously. If dellum does make this sideshow/street race sanctioned and legalized, someone is going to act a fool and will be closed in an instant. If they try it and everyone behaves that would be great but this is oakland, and for damn sure it won't be. The idea wasn't stupid though, to take this madness out from public streets to a closed sanction area.

I was really disturbed by the mayor's idea also. If people are doing something reckless and illegal, they should be arrested. And I thing the fact that there were handguns involved shows that these people are shady.
