Caltrans Shuts Down Bay Bridge

BAY BRIDGE (KRON) – Caltrans is shutting down the entire deck of the Bay Bridge for at least 24 hours to assess damage potentially sustained when two high strength rods snapped during the Tuesday evening commute.

Caltrans spokesman BART Ney tells KRON 4 engineers believe high winds caused the two rods and a lower cross brace to snap, sending debris down onto the roadway.  Contractor C.C. Myers is bringing his crews back to the bridge to fix the problem and install reinforcements.  The bridge could be closed longer than 24 hours depending on what crews find.

The incident was reported around 5:30 p.m. on the westbound upper deck of the bridge, just east of the new S-curve.

When the cable came loose, it went crashing into three vehicles.

Caltrans tells KRON 4 transportation reporter Mark Jones the strand that came loose was from the eyebar they had to do emergency work on over the Labor Day weekend.

He notes that they’ve examined it multiple times since the work was done, as recently as two weeks ago when they shut down the left-hand lanes on the bridge to make sure it was alright.

According to CHP Sergeant Trent Cross, an occupant of a Ryder Truck sustained a minor injury when the cable struck the vehicle and caused glass to shatter. No other injuries were reported.

Stay with KRON 4 and KRON4.com for the latest on this developing story.

Easy does it
Let's think back to Labor Day Weekend. People were angry the bridge was shut, they were angry when the crack was found and the repair time was lengthened. No one seemed to care about the consequences of reopening too soon back then. I think officials were forced into rushing things along. Let's allow common sense to rule this time around and keep the thing closed until it's fixed properly this time!

Question?
Is the cracked "eye Bar" in approximately the same location of the upper deck that fell in the '89 earth quake? Makes me wonder what else is actually going on with the bridge.

scary
Scary for such an incident to happen, especially after the new one was constructed. Shows that it probably was hastily put together and not closely inspected as supposed to??

I can't believe they took my toll knowing the bridge was closed and I'd never be able to cross. Typical govt workers.

wind? how about earthquake?
who is the engineer that designed this "bracket"? isn't this suppose to be a seismic retrofit? high wind caused it to break? how about a 7.0 earthquake? we are wasting money here!

Can you give us more news for Treasure Island residents? Is there a specific onramp we need to use to get home from the SF side?

Parts not made in USA
What do you expect. Sate trying to save money the parts came from a different country according to the news. Not american made trying to save a buck. I think safety should come first. BUY USA

Eversince this new "s-curve", this bridge has been causing problems. 26 accidents because people not slowing down, the safeway truck and no the eyebar. What will be in store for November?

Blame The Brown's
I commute on the BB everyday and everyday as I drive on it I cross my fingers there won't be any diasters. We could have had this new span up years ago if it Jerry and Willie Brown stayed out of the decision making process. Anything goes wrong it's on their heads.

it's NOT a cable but threaded rod!
check at www.baybridgeinfo.org and you'll see the pictures caltrans posted of the repair work over the labor day work. it's not accurate to call the steel rod 'cable' -- having the steel rods snap is much MORE significant to the nature of the mechanical failure. again, please check the bay bridge web site to see the actual picture of the failed components

GET THAT NEW BRIDGE UP!!!!
Heard there's a slowdown on the last piece of the new bridge -- perhaps this is a sign that everything that can be done, should be done to get the last section up as fast as possible!
