| This was not an "accident", or caused by poor design of the temporary S-Curve. This driver deliberately and willfully disregarded the posted maximum speed limit through the S-Curve. In so doing, he not only jeopardized himself, but also other motorists and construction works at this location. This driver lives locally and his company is local. There is no way that he was unaware of the temporary S-Curve on the bridge. If his occupation is to drive a delivery vehicle, then he should be well aware of the high center of gravity of his truck and the potential for load shifts. There is absolutely no justification for a delivery truck to be speeding. There are signs posted on the bridge and in every lane stating a 40 mph MAXIMUM speed limit. What is unclear about that? Does it say "40 mph only if you feel like it?". NO!!! If drivers are paying attention to the road and looking ahead as they should be, there should be no "surprise" about the curve and should be able to traverse it safely. The S-Curve is only about 300 feet in length. This driver lost his life because he tried to save about 20 seconds off his commute by speeding through the S-Curve. Was it worth it? The media is focusing on placing more signage to alert the drivers. It doesn't matter how many signs go up if drivers feel they do not have to obey them. If they ignore one sign, do you think that two or three signs makes a difference. NO!!!! With all the new signs and warning lights, it'll be like driving down the Vegas Strip at night. And how many of those signs do you pay attention to? |

|
|
| As far as I am concern I suggest Cal-Trans should think of a way to put a metering lights either before the S-Curve or in the middle of the S-Curve. It could be a possibility. Like the metering lights after the toll plaza. When my mom and I drive in that Bridge, right after the metering lights a lot of accidents may occur because the line changes so soon. From one lane to a wider lane. People never slows down. If they put bumps, Limit signs, flashing lights, etc will not work for drivers. Metering light may help. That's all. |

| I agree that the speeders are the problem, and that aggressive tactics need to be put in place to penalize these self-centered idiots. But since idiots continue to spawn idiots, can we please have some immediate safely measures to protect careful drivers? What is with the "s-curve" design and the flimsy guard rails - what is this - a DESIGNER bridge? Geez, any one of us could have been flattened by a load of pears this morning. |

| I belive that the S-curve is quite sudden and is often a suprise to most drivers; even when you are prepared for it. I often drive the speed limit but have to have both of my hands on the sterling wheel, just to control my car at 40mph.
i think the s-curve is more of a design for the bay bridge and to satisify the Engineers "design itch". Keep it simple and put back the old plan with a updated staight way. The life of the bridge is almost up- im told 2010, how many more accidents will have to happen until something is changed. One death is more than enough.
Safety should be the most concern, its obvious this is not working, so Cal-train you should listen and provide a safer option. |

| New Changes to the Bridge
|
|
| Regardless of drivers speed over the bay bridge and the S-Curve portion, the number of accidents are up to 44 on the S-Curve since Sept. 8. Yes, there probably wouldn't be as many accidents if all drivers watched their speed, but since this issue is still happening immediate action should be taken. If a drivers speed is five to ten mph over the designated limit the risk of a crash should not create such a high risk as it has. Only two CHP's traveled over the bridge in the span of one hour. That is not a high enough ratio for the amount of cars that travel the bridge in an hour. I think that it is also important to know that Caltrans have been informing the public that the S-Curve is a "temporary" fix. This temporary fix is for the next three to four years, if 44 problems have already happened in two months then the S-Curve should not stay as is for three or four more years. I have driven the bridge several times before and after the installment of the S-Curve and even while going the appropriate speed of 40 mph it is an awkward turn to drive even for bay area drivers aware of the change. It also does not help that the retaining walls on the side are very low in comparison to a large SUV or semi truck. |

| Do people take on any personal responsibility anymore? The problem is not with the roadway design, it's the individual drivers. Stop blaming everybody and everything but the driver that caused the accident. If the majority of the millions of cars that have crossed bridge since labor day was involved in accidents at that section of the bridge then the design is at fault. |

| We don't need more signs added, if we take a look those 40 more accidents are all speeding. Drivers should take our responsibilities about our action. Please drive slow, and don't point fingers to other things. The Cal-Trans should put Electronic Cameras on the S Curve, and give $200.00 ticket for each speeder. |

| There's no point trying to blame any group of people or call speeding drivers stupid. When a truck speeds and rolls over onto my car it isn't going to make me feel any better to be told it was the driver's fault. There are unsafe drivers in the world. It's an unavoidable brute fact. But I want to be reasonably safe even though there are unsafe drivers around. Most roads are built in such a way that the risk to me isn't that great even though these drivers exist. This isn't true of the S-curve, so it needs to be fixed. |

44 accidents since labor day and one guy is dead......Show me anywhere in the country with these statistics...this is horrible.
They should install automatic speed tripped cameras on the bridge with cameras set at 40mph with a $1000 dollar fine for exceeding the limit.
CAL TRANS Hopes? - JUST DO SOMETHING to STOP it. With a $1000 fine NO ONE will be able to speed since the rest of the traffic will gate the speed.

| Change the speed limit to 40 mph for the entire length of the bridge-beginning at the metering lights. Also add a big yellow sign "caution- construction zone- Fines Double" above the metering lights would help get drivers attention to slow down. They should also put up the cameras and give tickets to the speeders. That fines collected would help pay for the bridge, no more toll rate hikes. Those bumps are a good idea too. I agree with George on Kron4, the metering lights are really slow in letting cars through throughout the day. |

| Cameras, fines, little speed bumps, etc. are all useless when something REALLY bad happens on this bridge. CalTrans needs to deal with the physical barrier solution in a serious manner. It's doesn't have to be a bad driver, taking a curve at 50, or a methed-out trucker to cause the accident, anything could do it. Now stop the vehicles from flipping over the side. Let Europeans design this thing next time! |

| Agree no need to change a thing if you drive the correct speed limit on the bridge which is 50 MPH then you can easily slow down to 40 MPH. Drivers need to follow the ruels, like it has been said the usual speed on the bridge is 60-65 MPH 10-15 MPH above the speed limit and CHP does nothing about it. |

| i drive on this bridge everyday so what i notice is majority of engineers missed 1 important part of the key point called distraction. When you come close to the S-curve, you see the old section being taken apart, so 50% or up drivers spend few seconds to curiously at what people are doing on the old bridge. thus the consequences are very high, high to a point that if take about 1 second off the road, your risk is high. We pay so much $ to those people and they donot even examine very carefully what other roots cause because telling driver to slow down, pay attention......suggest them to put a Net so driver cannot see the old secton being taken down. Believe me, this will reduce 95% collision.....If they dnot build a Net to hide the old section of the bridge, no matter what they do accidents will always be there. |

| Drivers still drive way too fast on the bridge, even during the S Curve and need to slow down. In addition, drivers get frustrated with the back up at the toll plaza and once they get that green light, it's all for him/herself and a race to get across the bridge. Speed cameras would help and better construction of the toll plaza area that allows for a smooth traffic flow instead of a bunched up approach and lanes that create hazardous cris crossing of traffic. The speed should be lowered from the toll plaza all the way across the bridge, not come up on you in the middle of the bridge. I honestly think traffic would flow better if a lower speed were maintained from the toll booths. Placing more CHP on the bridge may be an answer but it creates a distraction, as well and causes traffic to back up even more, so maybe back to speed cameras would be beneficial just like they use in other cities and countries. |

| Regarding the recent fatality on the Bay Bridge: Let's get REALLY HONEST HERE - there have been an EXHORBITANT amount of accidents just since the Bay Bridge S-Curve opened. Let's quit talking around the problem and get to who's at fault and then a solution. The drivers are NOT at fault. This is a highly trafficed bridge and as I understand it never has had an accident rate like what has occured in the last 55 days (since it opened). Do NOT put the blame on the drivers. This is getting ridiculous, hearing about the drivers being at fault. There will always be an accident rate of some sort, but NOTHING like what has occured recently (the rate) has happened before on the Bay Bridge. This new bridge is a mess! People - drivers - will either slow down to 40 OR be forced to slow down to even slower than 40 as that speed reduction is going to cause a HUGE bottleneck for commuting traffic Thanks a lot Caltrain - great job! Not!! This is a disaster and a disgrace to the Bay Area. |

| I can't tell you how many people speed on the highways. I set my cruise control to 60 & I feel like I am standing still. Cars zoom on the left, cars zoom on the right. & I stay in the right lanes. I thought at least the high price of gas would slow people down. I have driven the S curve & during the speed limit there seems crucial.
Speeding is so widespread. I think the CHP needs really crackdown. The local governments & the state could use the extra income. |

| It is unfortunate that someone lost their life, but these bay area drivers have no conscience. It is not the S curve driving, but these ignorant drivers that can't obey the speed signs.
Maybe Caltran's should put up SPEED CAMERA'S, and then lets see if these drivers will pay attention to the tickets they would receive and the rise in their insurance. The drivers are the main problem, not the bridges, highways or roads.
Why should Caltran's have to put more money into this? Is this what the drivers want, it would mean a much higher bridge toll eventually. These drivers really need to think before they get behind the wheel.
Thank you,
Patty |

| From the Kron4 footage, it appears that the S-Curve occurs at the same time as the bridge begins the steeper portion of its descent to the ground. So not only must one calculate slowing for the curve but also for the gravity of the downward progression.
Yesterday, I was coming over the hill from Concord into Pittsburg on Highway 4 and suddenly realized that I was going 10 miles faster than I previously thought. Clearly my car felt the downward momentum before I did. I suspect that this is also an issue on the Bay Bridge.
I am a careful driver with no tickets for 30 years, but I was taken unaware by a descent obviously greater than I had forseen. New drivers to the bay bridge or even others not aware of how close they are to the curve could make this same mistake.
My temporary solution would be to begin those wake-up strips and signs well back before the curve. Tourists, newcomers to the bridge or sleepy truck drivers need to be alerted early on to avoid a similar accident.
Ultimately, the bridge should be torn down and reengineered with modern structural capacities and a more gradual decline and curve. |

| S curve barrier=another cal trans blunder!!!
|
|
| Its quite obvious looking at your S-curve footage that the barrier is NOT sufficiently high enough to prevent a big rig from going over the side in that area of the s-curve, a big rig at 40mph could possible push another vehicle over that barrier in a collision and there is no buffer zone at all for that stretch behind the barrier, another cal-trans blunder, could it be the same engineers that said the fix on the broken I-bar was good are the same ones that said this barrier was good??? |

| You know you can do all the thing that Cal-Trans is saying that they want to do to slow traffic across the bay bridge, but your always going to have the Indy drivers on the roads. Why can't Cal-Trans install high speed cameras to take pictures of those speeders. I think if you have them pay out of there pocket. I think they'll learn faster. In stead of just slapping them on the wrist. |

| Maybe they should lower the speed limit on the bridge and hand out speeding tickets out of the toll booth. And since it's a construction zone that fine will be doubled. And that just might keep the bridge toll from going up as well. |

| We need flashing yellow digital signs, the "sleeping police" white bumps on the road, red warning signs to warn drivers to SLOW DOWN. |

| One solution to the "S" curve is to remove the old section that is still there. If you are not familiar with the new turn and you are driving at night it looks like the road continues straight. |

| These is absolutely nothing wrong with this small stretch of road. When it rains,we know we should reduce our speed. When it`s foggy,we reduce our speed. When on busy city streets,we know we need to be careful, watchful, and maintain a sensible speed.Curvy ,winding roads require more caution and have lower speed limits. It`s very simple. Cal-Trans and the CHP have made it very clear that a speed reduction is necessary on this little stretch of bridge, especially if you are driving a larger vehicle. Why can`t people understand this and use a little common sense while passing over this spot that only takes about 30 seconds to traverse? |
