CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (BCN) -- Inmates at the Marsh Creek Detention Facility near Clayton have been designing and handcrafting toys that will be given to children in Contra Costa County this holiday season, Contra Costa County Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
About 115 student-inmates have participated in the project throughout the year, designing and handcrafting more than 1,100 toys, including 170 refurbished bicycles, Lee said.
The toys include wooden rocking horses, children's furniture, dollhouses, cribs, highchairs, pull toys, skill games and trains.
The inmates who made the gifts are all students at the Contra Costa Adult School. The program teaches student-inmates valuable skills they can use when they have finished serving their sentences.
During an event Thursday morning, representatives from more than 30 non-profit organizations will select toys to give to children in their clients' families for the holidays.
The Marsh Creek Detention Facility, also known as the "Farm", is a minimum-security facility for male inmates sentenced to up to one year in county jail. The facility is located about six miles east of Clayton.
