Hayward Man Fatally Shot While Walking Dogs With 13-Year-Old Daughter
Created by Kimberlee Sakamoto on 11/25/2009 11:53:00 AM

HAYWARD (BCN) -- A 38-year-old Hayward man was fatally shot while walking dogs with  his daughter Tuesday night, Hayward police said.

The shooting was reported shortly after 10 p.m. near the  intersection of B and Vermont streets.

Arriving officers found Thomas Cunningham unconscious and  suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Cunningham was taken by ambulance  to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley where he was pronounced dead, police  said.

Investigators said Cunningham and his 13-year-old daughter had  walked with their two dogs to a neighborhood liquor store to buy ice cream.

After purchasing the ice cream, they passed by the suspect. One of  the dogs approached the suspect and sniffed him, police said.

The suspect asked Cunningham and his daughter to get the dog, and  they did, but the suspect and Cunningham began exchanging words. The suspect  then pulled out a handgun and shot Cunningham, while the daughter ran to get  help from liquor store employees, police said.

The suspect was last seen running south on Vermont Street toward  Hill Avenue. He was described by witnesses as a black man in his early 20s,  between 5 feet 4 inches and 6 feet tall, with a very slight build, police  said.

He was wearing baggy blue jeans and a dark brown or black hooded  sweatshirt with a white logo on the rim of the hood. The sweatshirt may have  had an orange design on the front.

Members of the Police Department's Youth and Family Services  Bureau were called in to assist the daughter and the rest of the family, Lt.  Chris Orrey said.

"Obviously that's a pretty tragic thing to witness," Orrey said.

Investigators believe there are additional witnesses to the  shooting and urge anyone with information to call Inspector Rod Lampkin or  Inspector Fraser Ritchie at (510) 293-7034, or Hayward police dispatch at  (510) 293-7000.

Missing Tom Terribly
His sparkling eyes and comforting smile lit up our days at school, and he provided a sort of quiet security to all those children. Remember Tom on Facebook at Friends of Tom Cunningham...God Bless you, Tom.

I live in a good neighborhood
When I walk my dog at night in my neighborhood I don't allow my dog to sniff strangers and I don't talk to them, but they will talk to me. I've received greetings and comments from strangers that they like my dog and I smile back at them and continue on my way.

Plea to witnesses
A father is tragically dead. If you were a witness, PLEASE do the right thing and come forward. If not, you are somewhat to blame for the next violent act from this cowardly shooter!!!

Tom Cunningham
I knew Tom for years at my daughters' elementary school. He was a truly kind and generous person and would never have intentionally provoked anyone, much less in the company of his daughter. He was such a devoted father and was so proud of his daughter! God bless his family. The children are texting each other and are already crying. They are devastated! Tom will be missed. This is so wrong. This is just so wrong. Somebody please find the man who broke the hearts of so many by this senseless act of violence!

I'm tired of young idiots like you who think they are grown just because they carry a gun. You took an innocent life and riped that little girl's heart out. Who do you think you are God? Because God is the only person that should be taking lives and last I checked he isn't some dumb young punk! You give give Guns a bad name!

This filthy, scumbag gangbanger is why..
Law abiding citizens should be readily permitted to defend themselves with firearm carry permits.

We will miss you Tom!
I am still in shock that such a disgusting crime was committed against our dear friend Tom. I had the pleasure of seeing him at work almost every day. All of the kids and people that knew him loved him. He was one of the sweetest, most giving people I know. Our hearts go out to his family, especially his daughter. We love you Mr. Tom and you will be in our hearts forever.

why????
I just don't understand how someone could get so angry over something so trivial. And what's even more unbelievable is to be so angry that you would shoot somebody especially in front of a young child. I cannot understand this at all. If you have to fight what happened to the days of using your fists? I agree, what a coward this person was and I hope they find this animal and take away his life!

This is not the first time that he had encountered violence from someone in that neighborhood. Unfortunately this time the result was tragic. Tom was a great person and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. I know that my days will be much dimmer without his bright smile. My sympathy to his family and friends. You will be greatly missed Tommy..R.I.P.

This was my friend, ive known him since i was a little boy. Gangbangers wanna go and kill each other thats fine but dont go and kill a man that wants nothing to do with your stupid life style. I will miss going to the lake and riding dirt bikes with you Tom. And to your daughter and ex-wife i send my condolences.

what a surprising description of the suspect
Here's a novel idea...if you are a young healthy adult and wasting your life away unemployed and living off the hard earned $ of others (e.g. welfare) you get drafted into the army and actually start contributing to society. Oh wait, they won't even have these moronic scumbags...guess the only solution is to hand over more free money to them and talk about we really should feel sorry for them. Stop with the excuses America!

In front of the daughter!!!?
Yes,it does take a big man to shoot a father while he's walking his dogs with his 13 yr old daughter. I can't even imagine what this creep thought he needed to prove and to whom, by doing such a cowardly act!!!! Yes, Cowardly! You Creep, I have no doubt your reading these postings. How big of a man do you feel you are now. You scarred that child for life, you took her father, you didn't just take him, you did it in a very selfish and again, cowardly way. Being a father's daughter is the most important thing in the world to that little girl, no matter her age. I challenge you. If your blazing enough to commit an act so callas, are you blazing enough to be the tough guy and turn yourself in!? YOU are the very scum that gives Oakland and Oaklander's a bad name. If your not 'brave' enough to turn your tough self in, do us and that family a favor please. Blaze yourself!

Seeeeee
This just shows that it's still true that you're not even safe walking your dog to get ice cream in your own neighborhood. Anything can happen.
