Geologists Assess Damage to Pacifica Trailer Park

Trailers bordering the ocean are already boarded up at Pacifica Mobile Home Park

PACIFICA (KRON) -- Geologists and other experts are examining erosion damage at a Pacifica trailer park after a weekend surge damaged one mobile home.  The resident of the damaged home may be moved to another facility.  Other trailers that are boarded up are currently unoccupied.

"There's been a concern that anytime you have erosion starting, when you have a winter and rains like they were, we're very fortunate that it's not a strong El Nino year and that we haven't had terrible rains but the rains that we did have over the weekend were very concerning because you have rains on top and the high surf," Pacifica Mayor Sue Degrie told KRON 4's Yoli Aceves Monday morning.  "I saw the pier yesterday and they were very high near the pier.  This whole coastline is obviously a very serious situation."

Degrie says the erosion is similar to the problems faced by apartment complexes on Esplanade Avenue.

"We've had just about every government official who knows anything about anything, coming to the city to check on it," the mayor added.  "We have a city official checking things out.  He's the expert.  But we're obviously very concerned."

Rocks are already at the base of the cliff below the trailer park to help prevent the surf from causing more erosion.  The mayor said taxpayers won’t foot the bill for any more repairs.

"Financially we're not responsible for private property," Mayor Degrie said.  "We're concerned about the safety of everybody obviously.  So we're involving every governmental area possible for any type of help that can be given but these are privately paid for."
