Step by Step Guide to Bay Bridge Repairs

Thursday on the KRON 4 Morning News, Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney got out some diagrams of the bridge and a Sharpie and walked KRON 4's Darya Folsom through the process the transit agency is going through in making repairs to the Bay Bridge.  This is a step-by-step guide to the process with Ney's diagrams and in his own words.

"This is an eye-bar. It basically looks like an eye."

"This is the crack we found in one eye-bar that we discovered over Labor Day Weekend."

"This is the repair we put in over Labor Day Weekend."

"These (tie rods) basically takes the weight of the bridge that used to be on (the bottom) system and redistribute it (the new) system."

"What happened on Tuesday was that one of the tie rods cracked and the forces acting on it popped the crossbar off the top."

"We've gouged out the tack welds that were at this location and we put the crossbar back up."

"We've done a structural weld here."

"We've fused these two pieces into one piece so even if this does crack again, this piece will never pop off again and fall into traffic ."

"This is the repair system as it exists on the bridge."

"We're strapping the rods themselves at three different locations. These rods are about 80 feet long and they started moving in the wind.  So by strapping them to the eye-bar, it won't generate that vibration that could possibly cause a failure."

"We have a system for the nut which is self-centering."

"When we tighten this down, we'll be able to make sure that, no matter what, these rods are perfectly on center with the hole they have to go through so they can't rub up against the steel no matter how much movement they might see."
